Equality Illinois and Lambda Legal teamed up to create and LGBT equality booth, debuting at the Illinois State Fair Thursday in Springfield. It’s the first-ever LGBT booth to participate in the fair, according to a statement from EI.
“Our cause reaches every corner of Illinois, so there is no better place to meet hundreds of thousands of citizens from all over the state and every walk of life than the State Fair,” said Bernard Cherkasov, CEO of EI. “We are excited to participate in one of the grand traditions of the state.”
Both organizations advocate for LGBT rights throughout the state and the nation. In May, Lambda Legal and the ACLU of Illinois filed a landmark lawsuit demanding marriage equality in Illinois on behalf of 25 couples.
Volunteers and EI, Lambda Legal staff will participate in the fair at the booth, which will help drive awareness to LGBT rights issues.
“For 11 days we will be sharing stories of same-sex couples, their children, LGBT students, veterans, teachers, employees, and more with attendees from all across the state,” Cherkasov said.
The fair runs Aug. 9-19. The LGBT booth can be found near the Heartland Area by the West side of the Skyglider, close to Gate 2 at Peoria Road and Sangamon Avenue.
