State Rep. Deborah “Deb” Mell, one of three openly-gay legislators in the General Assembly, says she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Mell confirmed to the Chicago Sun-Times that she has stage one breast cancer and is currently going through more tests to determine options for treatment, but provided no other details to the paper.

Mell, 43, is the daughter of Ald. Dick Mell and the sister to Patti Blagojevich. She has represented the 40th Illinois House District since 2009. In 2011, she married her partner Christin Baker, a national director for the YMCA, in a ceremony in Iowa.
