Center on Halsted receives managerial excellence award, grant

Center on Halsted staff celebrated after the organization was named the winner of the 2012 Alford-Axelson Award for Nonprofit Managerial Excellence from North Park University Tuesday, an annual award given to a local non-profit each year that embodies ‘exemplary’ management qualities.

Along with the award, COH received a $7,500 grant.

“We work hard every day to build and strengthen the LGBT community,” said Modesto Tico Valle, CEO of Center on Halsted, upon receiving the award. “We work just as hard to hold ourselves to the highest level of excellence and professionalism in our work. To be recognized for this is an honor indeed.”

Organizations are nominated by a committee made up of Chicago-area non-profit and community leaders. The criteria used to determine the winner includes: a coherent organizational strategy that aligns programs and services to mission and goals; strong and effective leadership by staff and board; solid financial management; and a strong sense of integrity throughout organization’s culture, according to a news release.

“With their diverse funding base, strong controls on their financials, clearly defined policies and their remarkably-dedicated volunteers, who provide more than 2,000 hours of service each month, the Center continues to grow and thrive,” said Axelson Center in a video produced for the award.

Just last month, Center on Halsted celebrated its fifth year servicing Chicago’s and much of the region’s LGBT community.
