Doctor Keith sets a (diet) Coke addict straight

Dear Doctor Keith,

So I am a “social drinker” when it comes to the Diet Cokes. What’s the big deal? I just read in HuffPo that it’s almost the same as, if not worse then, drinking the red can! Is it as big of a stink as all of this?

Sincerely,
Coke Addict

Dear (diet) Coke Addict,

Holey Moley! Where to get started… How about we start with your cocaine reference in your signature because it truly is not far off.

Did you read about the lady from New Zealand who drank herself to death

drinking Coca Cola? The corporate PR machine went right to their own defense that she was consuming 2 gallons a day and a “‘grossly excessive ingestion of any food product, including water’ could be harmful.”

REALLY? Is it even necessary to address this rebuttal? The reason her body defaulted to a heart attack was more likely a result of the gigantic amounts of high fructose corn syrup (crack) and caffeine (CRACKY CRACK) ad carmel coloring (a possible carcinogen) than the quantity of liquids she was drinking.

So where does your diet soda fit into this equation? The article in Huffington Post you referenced stated:

“…If you are thinking that diet soft drinks or artificial or even natural sweeteners are the answer for getting off sugar, think again. Diet drink consumption has increased 400 percent since 1960. It may or may not cause cancer, but the evidence is mounting that it leads to weight gain rather than weight loss. Those who consume diet drinks regularly have a 200 percent increased risk of weight gain, a 36 percent increased risk of pre-diabetes or metabolic syndrome, and a 67 percent increased risk of diabetes. A study of 400 people found that those who drank two diet sodas a day or more increased their waist size by five times.”

Do these numbers resonate with you? Two hundred percent increase in weight gain… Does that sound like a “diet” you want to be on? Diabetes… a 67 percent increase? Pretty significant. Don’t even get me started on the five times waist size increase.

Whats the real deal? Lets start with the American Dietetic Association. The “experts” in this group are the ones that reportedly are, “committed to improving the nation’s health…” Can you guess who their major sponsors are? HINT: The largest war since WW2. The soda war! Yes, The Coca-Cola Company and Pepsico are two of the ADA’s top sponsors. The ADA will tell you that one or two diet drinks a day are a healthful replacement for their sugary, non-diet cousins, “in moderation.” Does this translate as healthful to you?

The answer to your question is yes! Diet soda consumption is not a good thing if you want to be healthy. Sure, you may be consuming no carbs, but at what cost? Last I checked water had no carbs. Coffee has no carbs unless you Starbuck-ify it! Our favorite lady, green tea, has no carbs and so many healthy benefits that we will continue to praise.

So why do we default to a 12 ounce shiny can full of chemicals that may increase your waist fivefold? Because we are trained to go there. We are told “it’s fine in moderation.” It’s not. Instead, drink water, drink green tea. But more importantly, continue to do your research about this potentially toxic liquid. You deserve health. We all do.

With love and health,

Doctor Keith
