The Gay Liberation Network and other pro-LGBT rights organizations are planning to protest Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum at an Arlington Heights campaign stop tonight.
The demonstration is to be held at Santorum’s speaking engagement at the Northwest suburb’s Christian Liberty Academy (502 W. Euclid Ave.) gymnasium beginning at 6:30 p.m., according to a press release from GLN.
“As obnoxious as Rick Santorum and his Republic [sic] colleagues are, there are no major presidential candidates who support full legal equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people, including President Obama,” said GLN co-founder Andy Thayer. “As long as Obama and other leading Democrats refuse to embrace and actively promote equal marriage rights, equal employment rights for Transgender people, and other aspects of full equality, they legitimize the politics of hate and discrimination and help bring into the mainstream the more rancid views of people like Santorum.”
The protest is organized by a group called Carmel Catholic Alumni Against Rick Santorum, which created a Facebook event page calling for participation.
Organizers are asking demonstrators to bring signs saying things like, “Catholics Against Hate,” “Carmel Catholic Alumni for Equality,” “No to Santorum, Yes to Equality” and “Catholics Embarrassed by Rick Santorum.”
