A 52-year-old man faces $500,000 bond and first-degree murder charges after police said he fatally stabbed his roommate in a domestic dispute late Monday night in their Lakeview neighborhood home.

Cook County State’s Attorney’s office spokeswoman Lisa Gordon confirmed that bond has been set and first-degree murder charges have been brought against Herbert Van Stephens, according to a report by CBS Chicago. Van Stephens is accused of stabbing John E. Atkinson, 25, to death.

As we previously reported, police responded to the apartment building at 600 West Stratford Place around 11:25 p.m. Monday and found both Atkinson and Van Stephens with multiple stabbing wounds. A third roommate was the first to call 911 after he woke up from sounds of the fight.

Atkinson, was pronounced dead early Tuesday at 12:08 a.m., according to information obtained by the Chicago Tribune from the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Both men were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where Van Stephens was listed as in critical condition Tuesday, according to the CPD.

Van Stephens faces a preliminary court hearing March 26.
