Mayor Rahm Emanuel has pledged to join more than 70 other mayors from across the country as part of a national bipartisan coalition to achieve marriage equality.

Freedom to Marry, a marriage equality campaign, is leading the effort and is working with local LGBT advocacy organizations to galvanize the mayors’ support.

The coalition, dubbed Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, is set to launch at a press conference to be held during the 80th Winter Meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Washington D.C. Jan. 20.

Emanuel joins a group of Democratic, Republican and Independent mayors from across the country, including Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York City and Annise Parker of Houston. The coalition is chaired by San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders, Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa.

The group of mayors hope to expand public and political support around the issue of marriage equality, according to Freedom to Marry.
