LGBT advocacy group demands Cardinal George’s resignation in full page Tribune ad

Truth Wins Out, a Burlington, Vt.-based LGBT rights group, has placed an advertisement in the Sunday Chicago Tribune calling for Cardinal George to resign, following his controversial comments comparing gays and lesbians to the Ku Klux Klan.

The ad placement follows the organization’s online petition for George’s resignation at change.org, which has garnered nearly 5,000 signatures.

The ad reads, “Hey, Cardinal Francis George, Gay is not like the KKK,” and goes on to criticize the archbishop’s comments and his unwillingness to apologize.

“This is not a legitimate fight over religious liberty as George wrongly implies, but a vivid example of religious bigotry fueled by a mean-spirited analogy that linked innocent, law-abiding families with the KKK. We will stand up against such lies and speak out when LGBT people are unfairly maligned,” said TWO director Wayne Besen in a press release.

On Tuesday, the cardinal issued a statement on the Chicago Archdiocese website defending his comparison of the gay pride parade to KKK demonstrations, and has continued to receive backlash from local and national LGBT leaders and organizations.
